As urban areas continue to grow at such a vast rate, we need to learn how to support this incredible growth and to thrive. In fact, over 160,000 people move into cities every day - the equivalent of Paris being rebuilt every month. Chris Luebkeman, Futurist, considers how to achieve sustainable urbanisation for a promising future.

THE CHALLENGES ARE POTENTIALLY HUGE.
Cities are organic living things. They grow with time. They tire under pressure. We need to keep them healthy and strong. The only way to make them as efficient as possible is by creating sustainable urban environments throug "trival".

Thrival is about being open to change and aspiring to something greater than mere survival. We must think about what we're doing in the urban environment - to look at our lives and the services provided, and compare them to service we might need in the future - and start making differences. With responsible decision-making, cities will have promising opportunities for social and economic advancement and for environmental improvements.

For example, one of our greatest prospects will lie in one of our current biggest issues: waste. In the future, the concept of garbage may be totally eliminated. Instead, waste will become one of our best commodities as a valuable resource for energy or building materials. Indeed the richest person in China is a recycling entrepeneur who has already become a billionaire.

Urbanisation is probably one of the most important driver of change in all our lives today. Our goal must be the thrival of populations around the world, and as our cities grow, our opportunities will bloom.
