Esta vez he decidido pasarme a un best-seller, titulado Los Juegos del Hambre (de Suzanne Collins) y llevado recientemente a la gran pantalla. He de decir que yo no he visto la película, porque en el 99 % de los casos es mejor el libro que la peli, a la vez que prefiero imaginarme yo a los personajes que hacerme una idea preestablecida sobre su aspecto físico.

En relación a la película, he oído críticas bastante malas. En cuanto al libro, creo que es una obra muy adecuada para la edad juvenil, mezclando temas como el amor y la competitividad, y todo ello envuelto en un ambiente misterioso que incita a una rápida lectura de la obra. De hecho, la lectura se hace muy sencilla y muchos capítulos dejan al lector con ganas de avanzar más para poder descubrir qué es lo que sucede. Todo lo mencionado en este párrafo es lo que lo hace realmente adecuado para el público juvenil.

Para el público adulto, en cambio, pienso que no es una obra grandiosa. Es indudablemente entretenida, pero creo que en este primer libro tanto la trama como el desenlace están muy enfocados hacia el público adolescente. Es cierto que en determinados momentos he llegado a hacer alguna reflexión (me parece que tal y como está el mundo, una situación similar - que no igual - podría darse), pero en general lo veo demasiado simple.

En conclusión, un 9 como libro para adolescentes y un 7 para adultos. Seguramente me leeré los demás libros de la saga, y puede que me hagan cambiar de opinión, pero este primero tenía todo lo necesario para sorprenderme y no lo ha hecho.

Este desconocido país pertenece al continente de Oceanía y recibe su nombre de un explorador inglés que las avistó por primera vez en 1799. Lo constituyen numerosas islas y atolones, y entre estos últimos, es muy conocido el atolón de Bikini, famoso por haber dado nombre, desde la década de 1950, al revolucionario bañador femenino integrado por dos piezas. Asimismo, dicho atolón fue escenario de pruebas nucleares estadounidenses.

La bandera nacional ondea en los 32 atolones de Marshall, esparcidos en aguas del Pacífico. El emplazamiento de la estrella indica la posición geográfica de las islas, algunos grados al norte de la línea del ecuador, simbolizado por 2 diagonales. Estas líneas radiantes, símbolo de crecimiento y vitalidad, evocan la paz (a través del color blanco) y la riqueza, el dinamismo y la abundancia (a través del color naranja). Los 24 brazos de la estrella representan las circunscripciones administrativas. Los cuatro haces alargados que forman el signo de la cruz hacen referencia a la fe cristiana del pueblo, a la vez que representan las cuatro islas principales del archipiélago.

Españoles, alemanes y japoneses ocuparon sucesivamente estas islas bordeadas de arena blanca. El 1 de mayo de 1979 este país seimiindependiente asociado con Estados Unidos izó su emblema nacional. El diseño de la bandera fue obra de Emlain Kaboula, la esposa del presidente.

Lord of the flies is the last book I've read, by the Cornish author William Golding, and it's one of the most popular books of the 20th century English literature.

I was encouraged to read this book from many people, and after having read it, I understand why. It's one of the best novels I've ever seen and a very different one, by the way.

The plot is about a group of children that have to survive on an uninhabited island in the middle of nowhere. In order to do that, they try to set up a kind of civilization, which must have some rules so they can live together in harmony. But many problems will arise and it looks like they'll have to stay in the island forever.

Although it may seem a children's novel, the way which it's written in reveals quite the opposite. In fact, the author describes perfectly the situation and he writes very well how the children would behave if they were trapped in that island. We all know that living together isn't easy and let alone when you're on an island from where you don't know when you'll go out. Moreover, it's obvious that children don't have common sense as most of adults have, so they're going to run wild and do some things that for adults are really cruel.

To sum up, I warmly recommend this book, because it's very realistic and catches the reader's attention from the very first moment. I couldn't help reading it all in a very few days, and nor could you, that's for sure!4

p.d. I want to add I read it in English, and personally, I found it a bit difficult. I mean, it's not the sort of book you can read with a first certificate level, since it's quite metaphoric and has a lot of vocabulary difficult to understand. So, if you don't have that level, I think you should read it very carefully so as to make sure you understand what the story means to convey.

The first rythm that they became used to was the slow swing from dawn to quick dusk. They accepted the pleasures of morning, the bright sun, the whelming sea and sweet air, as a time when play was good and life so full that hope was not necessary and therefore forgotten. Towards noon, as the floods of light fell more nearly to the perpendicular, the stark colours of the morning were smoothed in pearl and opalescence; and the heat -as though the impending sun's height gave it momentum- became a blow that they ducked, running to ths shade and lying there, perhaps even sleeping.

Strange things happened at midday. The glittering sea rose up, moved apart in planes of blatant impossibility; the coral reef and the few, stunted palms that clung to the more elevated parts would float up into the sky, would quiver, be plucked apart, run like rain-drops on a wire or be repeated as in an odd succession of mirrors. Sometimes land loomed where there was no land and flicked out like a bubble as the children watched. Piggy discounted all this learnedly as a 'mirage'; and since no boy could reach even the reef over the stretch of water where the snapped sharks waited, they grew accustomed to these mysteries and ignored them, just as they ignored the miraculous throbbing stars. At midday the illusions merged into the sky and there the sun gazed down like an angry eye.

This famous saying was coined in Pembrokeshire (Wales) in the mid 19th century, with other similar phrases such as "Eat an apple on going to bed, And you'll keep the doctor from earning his bread" or "Ait a happle avore gwain to bed, An' you'll make the doctor beg his bread".

I've read a post about the benefits of eating apples and I'm going to sum up the 8 good points mentionned in such text:

1- Apples contain Vitamin C, which helps greatly our immune system.
2- They contain flavonoids which, as well as having antioxidant effects, prevent both coronary heart disease and cardiovascular disease.
3- They're low in calories compared with any other sweet product (only 70-100 calories), but they contain sugar alike, so the desire to eat sweets disappear when taking an apple.
4- They help prevent cancers (colon, prostate and breast).
5- As this fruit contains phenols, it reduces bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol.
6- They prevent tooth decay, produced by a bacteria that dissappears in a very high proportion (80 %) thanks to the liquid apples had inside them.
7- In addition, due to the phytonutrients they contain, apples prevents neurodegenerative disorders (say Alzheimer's and Parkinsonism).
8- Eating 5 apples a week reduces breathing problems such as asthma.

So, we can understand why it's claimed that eating apples is so healthy.

Siguiendo con la tónica de este último año, vuelvo a comentar otro libro de meteorología (y puedo asegurar que no será el último).

Este libro ya posee una cierta antigüedad, por lo que la actualización de los datos es uno de los defectos más importantes de esta obra. Pero para haber sido publicado hace más de 20 años, he de reconocer que fue muy innovador para la época.

En cuanto a la explicación de los temas, se ha de tener en cuenta que es una obra de divulgación científica. Pese a ello, la complejidad de los temas da lugar ocasionalmente a explicaciones no demasiado adaptadas para personas que no tienen una base en la materia. Incluso para mí, que he leído varias obras de meteorología, me ha ocurrido que en determinadas secciones del libro me he llegado a perder.

No obstante, en general opino que es un libro muy interesante para la época en la que fue escrito y los contenidos seleccionados son excepcionales. Muchos de ellos se refieren a temas que aún hoy en día siguen debatiéndose, lo que considero algo muy acertado.

En cuanto a mi recomendación, creo que puede haber otros libros que merezcan más la pena por esa falta de adecuación de los contenidos a un lector de divulgación científica. En cambio, si se posee base avanzada, creo que es un interesante libro de lectura. En mi opinión, no se deben leer sólo aquellas obras actualizadas, sino que es interesante comprobar los avances que se han producido a lo largo del tiempo en un ámbito que se desarrolla a tanta velocidad como lo es la ciencia.
